Short Breaks in Dublin for St Patrick’s Day

St Patrick was a 5th Century missionary and is generally credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and driving out all the snakes, among other things. March the 17th is St Patrick’s Day, which has become more about Ireland and the global contribution of the Irish than a religious holiday. It’s celebrated around the world, but there is no better place to celebrate St Patrick’s Day than in the beautiful city of Dublin, capital of the Republic of Ireland. It’s a popular time to take city breaks in Dublin and to holiday in the rest of the country. There is a lot more to it than drinking pints of Guinness although that is, of course, quite a drawcard.

Timing your short holidays or weekend breaks in Dublin to coincide with the great Irish national holiday means you can also enjoy all the entertainment of the St Patrick’s festival, which runs for a few days leading up to St Patrick’s Day. It’s much more than just a bit of fun and a lot of drinking. The festival is a celebration of Irish culture and brings in elements from film, music, comedy, and theatre, and art.

City breaks to Dublin are always full of adventure and interest, but nobody taking short breaks in Dublin at this time of year will be short of things to see and do. Whatever aspect of Irish culture captures your attention the most, St Patrick’s Day is a great time to explore it more. And the best thing about the St Patrick’s Day Festival is that it’s free!

Enjoy the Summer of Sport with Weekend Breaks in London

Summer 2010 is set to be an outstanding one for sports fans, with the football World Cup, Henley Regatta and Wimbledon tennis tournament all coming up. What better way of enjoying them than on a short break in London?

London makes an excellent base for enjoying any of these events. Henley and Wimbledon are not far out of town, and there are plenty of large-screen showings of World Cup games. If polo’s your thing, watch the world’s top polo stars in action at London’s Hurlingham Park, the traditional home of the sport. Or travel at the right time of year and catch some world-class rugby at Twickenham, or cricket at Lord’s or the Oval. With city breaks to London, you won’t miss any of the action.

And, of course, interest in sport in the UK’s capital is only going to increase as the city gears up for the Olympic Games in 2012.

As well as sports, you may want to come to London for the August beer festival at Olympia, among other special events from Picasso exhibitions to a chance to see inside Buckingham Palace.

If you’re looking into short breaks to London, see what we at Golf Weekend Breaks have to offer before you do anything else. Our short breaks to London are hotel-only deals, staying in four star comfort. We make booking short stays in the capital really easy – and we’re also ATOL-protected for extra peace of mind.

Things to Do on Short Breaks in the Dublin Area

There is more to County Dublin (or the Dublin Region if you want to use the modern terminology) than the city itself. Although there is plenty to do on city breaks in Dublin - history, culture and one the best theatre, comedy, and live music scenes in Europe - taking short breaks in Dublin is also an opportunity to explore a little more of Ireland.

You can go further and visit a neighbouring region. A day visit to County Wicklow is an ideal compliment to city breaks in Dublin. It has beautiful golf courses, lush green hills, and provides a taste of the quieter, more rural face of the Republic of Ireland. There are plenty of romantic windswept castle ruins and fascinating early Christian historical monuments within easy reach of Dublin.

There are ancient Celtic Crosses and even older monuments from before the time of St Patrick in the area. For those with a rather more modern focus, Dublin is the home of the Guinness Storehouse, complete with tours and tastings. Pubs with live music can be found any evening of the week. Everything that Ireland is famous for is available to you on short breaks in Dublin and surrounds.

Most people on weekend breaks in Dublin will find it’s not as rainy as they thought it might be. The city and county enjoy a much drier climate than the famously wet and windy (although ruggedly beautiful) west coast of Ireland. The climate is generally mild and not given to extremes of any kind, although it is sometimes windy.
