Weekend Breaks in Athens

The city of Athens is one of the oldest in the world and wherever you go there are signs of past glories. It has a recorded history of more than 3000 years and has probably been occupied for far longer than that. Even the shortest of weekend breaks in Athenswill give you time to soak up the history. In fact, you can hardly take city breaks in Athens without being awed by the architecture of millennia.

On a weekend breaks in Athens, you’ll find that it’s one of the leading cities of the modern world. While ancient monuments dominate the city, keen observers will also be interested in the strong Bauhaus and Art Deco influences of the more recent city buildings. Athens is also an architectural stronghold for the famed International Style. The variety of buildings are stunning, and Athens deserves credit for many more buildings than those we’re accustomed to seeing in travel brochures.

With a population of more than four million, Athens is a bustling city that is as rich in culture and cuisine as it is in history. The scenery in and around the city is spectacular. The parks are worth a look, particularly for British visitors. With their tall, shapely palm trees and miniature pine forests, they provide an interesting contrast to the broadleaved trees and manicured lawns we are used to. You can even take a cable car up into the mountains outside the city and soak up the view over Greece. There is a great deal to see on short breaks to Athens.

Weekend Breaks in Dubai

Dubai is one of the great cities of the modern world. For British visitors it offers a stunning window into the Arab world at its most decadent. The warm weather and blue skies are also an undeniable draw for those usually confined to the cold, wet United Kingdom, where any given weekend may prove rainy and grey even at the height of summer. One of the best reasons to take short breaks in Dubai is that you are virtually guaranteed to have sunny weather every day. In the warmer months, hotel swimming pools are often cooled for the comfort of guests rather than needing to be heated.

Golf often plays a big part in weekend breaks in Dubai. The weather is overwhelmingly clear and sunny, and the golf courses are undeniably world class and the best in the Middle East. The city is host to more than half a dozen golf clubs - if you only come for a couple of days at a time it will take you several short breaks in Dubai to play them all.

But there is also more to city breaks in Dubai than sporting opportunities. The shopping is incredible - and then of course there is the swimming, all the relaxing in the sun you can handle, and the exotic and interesting culture of the United Arab Emirates to explore. The food and hotels are among the finest anywhere on the globe - in fact, the world’s most luxurious hotel finds its home there - and there is plenty to do for golfers and non-golfers alike.

Ancient History on Short Breaks to Athens

For short breaks, Athens is one of the finest destinations to choose. Here, history isn’t something you need to go into a museum to see. It’s right out on the streets and part of the everyday life of the city. For the citizens of this great and ancient metropolis, the Parthenon is just as commonplace a sight as the houses of Westminster and Big Ben are to Londoners. On city breaks in Athens, you’ll see history everywhere you go.

Much of Classical Athens remains standing, albeit in ruins. The Parthenon is just one example that is well known all over the globe, and attracts visitors from many different countries. The temple of Hephaestus is another must see attraction for anyone considering city breaks in Athens, and there are many more ruins and partial remains from the same period scattered around the area. They are complemented by many fine neo-classical buildings that do much to lend Athens a sense of history and an elegance of architecture.

Of course, architecture is just the start. As you would expect, Athens has a huge number of fine classical statues dotted about the city, and many more in museums and collections. Interested visitors will not have a moment with nothing to see.

For those interested in a period even further back in time, the Cave of Schist can be included on weekend breaks in Athens. It was occupied at least 9000 years ago, if not more. Few sites in the world can boast such ancient signs of human occupation, especially in large cities.

See History on Weekend Breaks to New York

The city of New York has a rich culture and history. Originally the territory of the Algonquin, Iroquois, and Lenape tribes, the area was settled by the Dutch at the beginning of the 17th Century - not long ago in terms of European history, but the American story packs a lot of great events into that brief 400 years. On short breaks in New York you can see living and breathing evidence of world-shaking happenings all around you.

After passing into British hands for a little over a century, the city was fundamental to the American Revolution. On short breaks in New York you can find out much about this fascinating period of history, often neglected by British and European writers and reporters. There is plenty to learn and a great deal to see whatever time period interests you the most.

More recent history is also unmissable even on the briefest of city breaks in New York City. Among other attractions are Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. While the latter is far better known and weekend breaks in New York aren’t complete without a visit to it, Ellis Island may have an even more significant story. As the main entry point for European immigrants from 1892 to 1954, the great waves of immigration that made America and especially New York so vibrant and so richly multicultural all passed through Ellis Island. It is especially poignant as a reminder of those dispossessed by the Second World War, who went on to seek and find sanctuary so far from home.

What is the Weather Like in Athens?

On short breaks in Athens you can expect warm weather. Greece is famous for its sunny days and clear, cloudless blue skies. In winter, visitors on city breaks to Athens can expect maximum temperatures of about 13 Celsius to 16 Celsius during the day, falling to 5 or 7 Celsius at night. It may rain a little, but overall the climate in Athens is much drier than much of the Mediterranean and certainly far drier than the United Kingdom.

In summer, temperatures rise to an average maximum in the low thirties. On weekend breaks in Athens, swimming and sunbathing are the order of the day, and conditions are perfect for exploring the ancient monuments around sunset when they are spectacularly lit and at their most dramatic. On the way back to your hotel you can stop at any one of the city’s fine restaurants for dinner.

In the evenings temperatures sink to around 21 Celsius, pleasantly warm but not too hot to get a good night’s sleep. Humidity is low in summer, which makes heat much more comfortable.  The city is host to several international-standard hotels, and staying in one of these over your weekend breaks in Athens will add even more enjoyment to your visit. Choose one with a swimming pool for summer visits or take a trip to the coast in the hottest part of the day. Concerted efforts have been made to reduce water pollution in Athens’ sea waters and they are now popular with water-loving locals and visitors alike.

Enjoying City Breaks to Prague

The great thing about weekend breaks to Prague is how much you can pack into your holiday in a very short time. Because it’s a pretty compact city centre, with most of the main things you’ll want to see located close together, you can get around easily on foot.

Short breaks to Prague are like taking a step back in time, since the old medieval buildings, gothic churches, baroque domes and Renaissance squares are all so fantastically preserved.

The area immediately surrounding the castle dominates the city, and includes the St. Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, museums, and the Golden Lane. Also not to be missed is the ‘little quarter’, which has scarcely changed since the 18th century. Cross Charles Bridge, lined with stalls and statues, to reach the old town. Watch the procession of figures on the 400 year old astronomical clock in the old town square, which is packed with gorgeous pastel coloured town houses, palaces and inns. Wenceslas square is near, as is the national museum.
